Bio:
Steve Cole is an Associate Professor in the Division of Hematology-Oncology at the UCLA School of Medicine. After receiving his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1993, Dr. Cole undertook 5 years of post-doctoral training in molecular virology at UCLA. His laboratory studies social regulation of gene expression and the biochemical signaling pathways involved. Much of this research focuses on viral genomes (HIV-1, KSHV) and the hormonal control of human gene expression dynamics. These studies take advantage of statistical bioinformatics tools developed by Dr. Cole to analyze the upstream control of gene expression by transcription factors and chromosomal alterations. Several of his software tools are in wide-spread use, including FOCUS (hypothesis-driven microarray analysis), GenomeScan (mapping chromosomal alterations from gene expression data), and TELiS (assessing transcription factor activity from gene expression data). His research has garnered a series of grants from the National Institutes of Health, nationwide media coverage on television, radio, newspapers, and the internet, and several scientific honors including Fellowship in the Academy of Behavioral Medicine research, the Cornelius Hoppers Young Investigator Award from the University of California AIDS Research Program, the George Miller Young Investigator Award from the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research, Stanford's Centennial Teaching Award, the Daniel G. Aldrich Research Award at the University of California Santa Barbara, and served as an invited scholar and instructor at the Santa Fe Institute for Complex Systems. In addition to his primary appointment in the Department of Medicine, Dr. Cole is also a member of the Norman Cousins Center, the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the UCLA Molecular Biology Institute.
