This comprehensive, multidisciplinary center focuses on the study and treatment of chronic diarrheal disorders, including:
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) - Crohn's, Ulcerative colitis
- Irritable bowel disease (IBS)
- Celiac Disease (CD)
- Short gut syndrome - Gastroschistis, atresia, volvulus, mesenteric artery thrombosis
- Autoimmune enteropathy - autoimmune polyendocrinopathy- candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy (APECED), IPEX syndrome
- Radiation Enteritis
- Secretory diarrhea - Chloride/Sodium diarrhea
- Congenital Enteropathy - Microvillus inclusion disease, Tufting enteropathy, others
- Malabsorptive diarrhea - Enteric Anendocrinosis, Glucose/galactose malabsorption (GGM), Lactase deficiency, Sucrase-isomaltase deficiency
- Diarrhea of unknown etiology
Diagnostic medical technologies offered by the Center include:
- Endoscopy - push enteroscopy, capsule endoscopy
- Surgery - intra-operative enteroscopy
- Radiology - small bowel follow through, CT, MRI
- Nuclear medicine - gastric emptying and small bowel transit
- Motility - Electrogastrography
- Pathology - Histopathology
Treatment modalities include:
- Dietary modification and supplementation
- Gut adaptation
- Parenteral/enteral nutritional support
- Intestinal transplantation
Basic Science Research:
- Genetic testing of various diarrheal disorders
- Identification and analysis of diarrhea disorders of unknown etiology
