Information: This comprehensive, multidisciplinary center focuses on the study and treatment of chronic diarrheal disorders, including:

  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) - Crohn's, Ulcerative colitis

  • Irritable bowel disease (IBS)

  • Celiac Disease (CD)

  • Short gut syndrome - Gastroschistis, atresia, volvulus, mesenteric artery thrombosis

  • Autoimmune enteropathy - autoimmune polyendocrinopathy- candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy (APECED), IPEX syndrome

  • Radiation Enteritis

  • Secretory diarrhea - Chloride/Sodium diarrhea

  • Congenital Enteropathy - Microvillus inclusion disease, Tufting enteropathy, others

  • Malabsorptive diarrhea - Enteric Anendocrinosis, Glucose/galactose malabsorption (GGM), Lactase deficiency, Sucrase-isomaltase deficiency

  • Diarrhea of unknown etiology


Diagnostic medical technologies offered by the Center include:

  • Endoscopy - push enteroscopy, capsule endoscopy

  • Surgery - intra-operative enteroscopy

  • Radiology - small bowel follow through, CT, MRI

  • Nuclear medicine - gastric emptying and small bowel transit

  • Motility - Electrogastrography

  • Pathology - Histopathology


Treatment modalities include:

  • Dietary modification and supplementation

  • Gut adaptation

  • Parenteral/enteral nutritional support

  • Intestinal transplantation


Basic Science Research:

  • Genetic testing of various diarrheal disorders

  • Identification and analysis of diarrhea disorders of unknown etiology
