My RWJ-funded project examines the role of the school and community environments in the occurrence of school-related violence in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Conducting this project has allowed me to gain a greater depth of knowledge in environmental contributions to injury and violence. By allowing me to establish links in schools and the community, the project has also given me the opportunity to work beyond the doors of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. I have been at CHLA since 1997 in the Division of General Pediatrics, am Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the USC Keck School of Medicine, and am also Adjunct Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at the UCLA School of Public Health. At CHLA, I serve as the primary care pediatrician to a panel of medically-complex children in the Special Needs Clinic, precept residents in their continuity care clinic, and serve as medical director of the Reach Out and Read Program. In 1998, I was the recipient of the Barbara M. Korsch Award for Excellence in Medical Education and was awarded a Junior Faculty Career Development Award from USC in 1999.
I have served as Chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Chapter 2, Committee on Injury and Violence Prevention and am on the Executive Committee of the Southern California Injury Prevention Research Center, serving as co-director of Pediatric Injury Research. I teach a graduate level course on the epidemiology and prevention of childhood injuries at the UCLA School of Public Health. My research interests in general are the epidemiology, causes, and prevention of pediatric injuries, and in particular, school-related injuries and violence.
I have been married to Ralph Robinson, a microbiologist at UCLA, since 1999 and am mom to Davis, born in 2003, a full-of-energy, full-of-smiles little boy who makes my day everyday.
