Utilizing the Internet to provide health related information, resources and data, as well as to supplement surveillance activities. Surveillance and control of vaccine preventable diseases. Polio, Measles, and Rubella eradication.

Current Research Interest:

Computerized and Internet dependent Health Data Information Systems; reviewing and evaluating strategies for eradicating Polio, Measles, and Rubella; research techniques in evaluating public health programs; development of health status indicators for local health programs and health departments; methods used in the review of international health programs such as the World Health Organizations EPI and CDC programs and bioterrorism research.



Bio: In his current position, Director of Web Informatics at the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health he oversees Web Development (http://publichealth.lacounty.gov). In previous appointments at the County, Dr. Strassburg was Chief Epidemiologist for the Department, and Director of the Immunization Program. Recently he has been involved in developing a emergency preparedness plans and training protocols for bioterrorism, pandemic flu, and emerging diseases for Los Angeles and other municipalities. Outside of his work at the County he has served as a consultant in the field of Epidemiology and Information Systems for over 30 years. For the World Health Organization he has consulted in over 25 countries, principally on disease surveillance and eradication strategies, as well as public health information systems. Five diseases have received the focus of his attention during this period; smallpox, polio, measles, rubella, and neonatal tetanus. For over 25 years he has taught classes in the Department of Epidemiology at the School of Public Health, UCLA, where he is currently Adjunct Professor. He also teaches public health courses at USC and for the online TUI University. Courses aim to provide both majors and non-majors with practical knowledge related to epidemiological measures and practice at local, state, federal, and international levels. More recently some of his classes have included techniques in developing surveillance and Information systems on the Web.
